An If I Had A Hammer Field Trip integrates academic subject matter with the fun, hands-on activity of building the Hammer House.
During this 2-½ hour Field Trip, students work as a group to assemble the 8’ x 11’ Hammer House. The finished product – a free-standing house complete with windows, door, and a front porch – is the result of team work, communication, and the real-life application of math and science concepts.
Students also build self-esteem and experience a powerful sense of accomplishment that comes through hard work.
There are several scheduled Build Breaks during which the Hammer “Boss” speaks with the students about a variety of topics including:
- The importance of mathematics in life
- How to calculate
- Area
- Perimeter
- Volume
- How to Measure
- Why it is important to build your life on a good foundation
- Why making good choices is important, especially where drugs and gangs are concerned
- Work ethic and career goals
Cost: Contact If I Had A Hammer for a current schedule of Field Trip fees.
